KATHERINE CARLYLE
14th President
1995- 1996
Hi! I*m Katherine Carlyle. I served as president of Gwinnett County
Retired Teachers Association for the year 1995 - 1996. I was most fortunate to have a great slate of officers who supported
our organization and me in many special ways.
Deloris Mullins was our president-elect and took care of the programs. The special magic show, which was both interesting
and very humorous, highlighted the year. Nancy O*Neill, our secretary, did a
fantastic job of minutes keeping. . .always prompt and efficient. Jackie Perry served as treasurer and kept up with our "big
bucks" without a hitch. Gailya Raines was immediate past president. I called on her many times for guidance and counseling.
We*re proud of the fact that we put together the first annual yearbook
to be distributed to all the members. We found through the year that this book was invaluable as a quick reference for important
information and important people.. .both locally and at the state level. Reid Mullins brought in a donation from the Gwinnett
Federal Credit Union which largely defrayed the expense of the books.
The first teacher scholarship was awarded to a Gwinnett County teacher during this term. A teacher working for
an advanced degree in education was one of the primary requirements. Reid proposed this teacher scholarship to the board and
it was quickly resolved to follow through with the idea. This award, along with the student scholarship award, was presented
at our May meeting held at the Vines Botanical Gardens.
During the course of the year, Bob and Marie Beiser were putting together an outstanding scrapbook. It won 1st
Place for our unit at the area level and was displayed in Macon at the State Convention. Mary Long ran for Area Director for
our association and won that office. It is nice to have a representative from our unit at the state level. We were all highly
pleased when Don Herndon was named Gwinnett County Senior Citizen of the Year.
I appreciate the honor of being Gwinnett County Retired Teachers Association president. It was fun, hectic at times,
and educational for me. I think the year went well for our organization.
